Games Like Minecraft: Minecraft’s Own Developer Picked Minecraft
The most useful review of the best Minecraft alternative ever made came from the man who runs Minecraft. Jens Bergensten, Minecraft’s creative lead, played Hytale and called it “very polished.” Then he said he would “rather just play Minecraft.” That is the whole problem with this question in one sentence. Not that the alternatives are bad – Hytale is genuinely excellent and sold over a million copies in weeks – but that every single one of them involves giving something up, and nobody ever tells you what.
So this is organised around the trade. For each recommendation: what you gain, and precisely what you surrender. Because the honest answer to “what should I play instead of Minecraft” is usually “something alongside it,” and the lists that pretend otherwise are the reason people bounce off six games in a month and go back.
What You Are Actually Competing With
Before any recommendation, the scale of the thing being replaced, because it explains every trade that follows.
Minecraft has sold over 400 million copies as of May 2026, making it the best-selling video game ever made – a title it has held since 2019. Its last published monthly active figure was 140 million. It has been in continuous development since a public alpha in May 2009.
And it has not stopped. Mojang changed its version numbering this year, with 26.2 adding the sulfur cave biome and sulfur cube and 26.3 adding the dappled forest biome. In September 2026, the studio announced an entirely new dimension, The Sift, for 2027. A Nintendo Switch 2 version arrived on October 27.
That is a seventeen-year-old game shipping new biomes this year and promising a new dimension next year.
Minecraft’s moat is not a feature. It is accumulation. Seventeen years of updates, every platform anyone owns, a modding ecosystem measured in hundreds of thousands of files, and the fact that your friends already have it. No new game can manufacture any of that, which is exactly why the best one made so far still lost an argument with its own competitor’s lead developer.
The Closest Thing: Hytale, Which Died and Came Back
If you want one answer, this is it, and its history is the most remarkable thing in sandbox gaming.
Hypixel Studios began building Hytale in early 2015, prompted by Mojang’s 2014 EULA changes damaging the revenue of Hypixel’s Minecraft server. It was announced in December 2018 to enormous excitement, due in 2021. Riot Games fully acquired the studio in April 2020. The scope grew, the delays stacked up, and the team changed engines in July 2024.
Then on June 23, 2025, Hytale was cancelled and the studio closed, with the reason given as its overly ambitious scope.
It should have ended there. Instead, co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme bought the game back from Riot on November 17, 2025, rehired 30 developers, and put it into early access on January 13, 2026 at $20. Pre-purchase revenue reportedly funded at least two years of development.
It worked. Over a million players shortly after launch, and a peak of more than 420,000 concurrent Twitch viewers, briefly making it the most-watched game on the platform.

Where it stands now:
- Four zones available as of July 2026, with more planned.
- Exploration and Creative modes live, with server-side modding.
- Update 5, on May 26, 2026, added controller support, an in-game server browser, a friends list with Discord integration and a Trigger Volume tool.
- Over 5,000 player-made mods with more than 20 million CurseForge downloads by March 2026, when the studio ran a modding contest with $100,000 in prizes.
- Hytale Shared Source, announced June 2026, will release server source code and assets to licensed players.
- Chapter 1, previewed July 16, 2026, centres on the goblin faction with a handcrafted dungeon, a boss fight and party minigames.
What you give up: Adventure mode is still in development. IGN’s criticism was a lack of direction, which is the standard complaint about an early-access sandbox with its story content unshipped. You are also buying a game whose roadmap depends on a studio that was closed eighteen months ago.
What you gain: ten dollars cheaper than Minecraft, visibly more modern, built from the ground up for modding, and made by the people who ran Minecraft’s biggest server. If any game is going to do this, it is this one.
| Game | What You Gain | What You Give Up |
|---|---|---|
| Hytale | Modern engine, deep modding, $20, genuine Minecraft DNA | Unfinished Adventure mode, no console versions, a short history |
| Vintage Story | Survival that stays genuinely hard for hundreds of hours | Accessibility – it is unforgiving and niche |
| Terraria | Real progression, bosses, a finishable arc | The third dimension, and free-form building |
| Satisfactory | The engineering itch redstone only hints at | Survival, exploration and combat as priorities |
| Roblox | A social platform with millions of creators | Coherence, and a single designed game |
| Deep Rock Galactic | The best co-op caving in games | Permanence – you do not keep what you dig |
| No Man’s Sky | Scale no voxel game can match | Density, and the satisfaction of block-by-block work |
| 7 Days to Die | Base building with something to defend against | Whimsy, and family-friendliness |
| Stardew Valley | Calm, routine and characters | Building freedom, and verticality |
| Starbound / Trove | 2D space exploration, or a blocky MMO | Scale and active development |
Games Like Minecraft for the Part You Actually Play
Nobody plays all of Minecraft. The trick is identifying which Minecraft you mean.
- If you play it for survival: Vintage Story is the answer, and it is a serious one. An uncompromising wilderness survival game with extreme weather, dangerous wildlife and eldritch horrors, built for players who found iron armour made Minecraft trivially safe. The trade is harshness – this is not a game you hand a nine-year-old.
- If you play it for progression and bosses: Terraria, which is routinely called 2D Minecraft and is nothing of the sort. It has an actual arc, NPCs who move into your base and work, real boss fights and an expert mode. What you give up is the third dimension, which is more of a loss for builders than anyone admits.
- If you play it for redstone: Satisfactory. First-person factory building on an alien planet, with exploration and combat against the locals. Redstone is a hobbyist’s logic toy bolted onto a survival game; Satisfactory is that impulse as the entire design.
- If you play it for the servers and the social side: Roblox, honestly. It is a creation platform with an economy for buying and selling virtual items rather than a game, which is precisely what Minecraft’s server scene became. The trade is that nobody designed the whole thing.
- If you play it for co-op caving: Deep Rock Galactic – procedurally generated caves, hostile creatures, a mining focus and four players shouting at each other. You dig, you leave, you do not keep the hole.
- If you play it for exploration at scale: No Man’s Sky, which added base building, survival and multiplayer over years of updates and offers more planets than you can visit in a lifetime. The trade is density.
- If you play it to relax: Stardew Valley, with crops, animals, mining, relationships and multiplayer. Different game, same evening.
Also worth knowing: 7 Days to Die for survival crafting with traps, NPC trading and five environments; Starbound for randomly generated planets in two dimensions; Trove for blocky MMO dungeon-running with classes; and Seed, a cooperative MMO about colonists settling a new planet, still in pre-alpha.
The Trades Nobody Mentions
Five things that do not appear in recommendation lists and that decide whether an alternative actually sticks.
Mods. Minecraft’s modding ecosystem is seventeen years deep. Hytale’s is the only one even in the conversation, at 5,000 mods and 20 million downloads inside three months – impressive, and roughly two orders of magnitude behind. If a specific mod is why you play Minecraft, no alternative has it.
Platforms. Minecraft runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2, Raspberry Pi and Apple TV. Hytale runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. For a game you want to play on a sofa or a phone, that is the whole argument.
Your friends already own it. The best multiplayer sandbox is the one five people can join tonight without a purchase decision.
Children. A large share of Minecraft’s audience is young, and several of the best alternatives – Vintage Story, 7 Days to Die – are specifically unsuitable. This is a real constraint and lists never mention it.
Longevity. Most alternatives are 40 to 80 hour games. Minecraft is a game people have played for a decade. Those are different products with the same shape.
| Minecraft | Hytale | Vintage Story | Terraria | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $29.99 | $20 | Paid, niche | Budget, frequently discounted |
| Platforms | Nearly everything | Windows, macOS, Linux | PC | Nearly everything |
| Modding | Seventeen years deep | Built-in, growing fast | Strong for its size | Extensive |
| Still updating | Yes, new dimension in 2027 | Yes, Chapter 1 pending | Yes | Occasional major patches |
| Finishable | No | No | No | Yes |
Which Games Like Minecraft Actually Replace It
The honest answer, which no list wants to give.
Almost none of them. Of everything above, exactly one is attempting to be a full replacement rather than a complement, and that one is in early access with its Adventure mode unfinished and no console versions.
Everything else on this page is a supplement. Vintage Story replaces the survival half and not the building half. Satisfactory replaces redstone and nothing else. Terraria replaces progression and removes a dimension. Roblox replaces the server scene and is not a game. Deep Rock Galactic is four people and a hole.
Which is not a criticism of any of them. It is a statement about what Minecraft is. A game that has had seventeen years to become six games at once cannot be replaced by one game, and the attempt that came closest was built over a decade by the people who ran its biggest server, funded by Riot Games, cancelled, resurrected, and is still only four zones in.
The realistic plan is a rotation, not a replacement. Play Vintage Story for a hard winter. Play Satisfactory when you want to build a machine instead of a house. Play Hytale and watch whether Chapter 1 lands. Go back to Minecraft when The Sift arrives in 2027, because you will.
Why Blocky Is Not the Same as Minecraft-Like
One structural complaint about every list on this subject, including the reputable ones.
Recommendation lists routinely include games whose only connection to Minecraft is a visual style. Minecraft Legends is a real-time strategy game that happens to feature Minecraft characters. Fortnite’s Creative mode is a map editor and Save the World is a wave-defence shooter. Stardew Valley is a farming simulator with no building freedom and no voxels at all. All three are fine games. None of them scratches the itch.
The properties that make something genuinely Minecraft-like are specific: a voxel grid you can modify anywhere, a world that generates outward without an edge, a crafting tree that gates exploration, and the ability to invite people into your copy of it. Count those four against any list and most entries fail at least two.
Hytale passes all four. Vintage Story passes all four and is far harsher. Terraria passes three and loses a dimension. Almost nothing else on a typical list passes three.

FAQ
What is the closest game to Minecraft?
Hytale, built by Hypixel Studios – the team behind Minecraft’s biggest server. It entered early access on January 13, 2026 at $20, passed a million players quickly, and peaked above 420,000 concurrent Twitch viewers.
Wasn’t Hytale cancelled?
Yes. Riot Games cancelled it and closed the studio on June 23, 2025. Co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme bought the game back on November 17, 2025, rehired 30 developers, and shipped it into early access eight weeks later.
What did Minecraft’s developer say about Hytale?
Creative lead Jens Bergensten called it “very polished” but said he would “rather just play Minecraft.”
What is the best Minecraft alternative for hardcore survival?
Vintage Story – an uncompromising wilderness survival game with extreme weather, wildlife and eldritch horrors, aimed at players who find Minecraft too forgiving once they have iron.
Is Minecraft still being updated?
Very much so. Version 26.2 added the sulfur cave biome and 26.3 added the dappled forest biome, and a new dimension called The Sift was announced in September 2026 for 2027.
How many copies has Minecraft sold?
Over 400 million as of May 2026, making it the best-selling video game of all time – a position it has held since 2019.
What should I play if I only like redstone?
Satisfactory. First-person factory building where the logic and automation that redstone gestures at is the entire game rather than a side system.
Every Answer Is a Trade
What makes this question genuinely hard is that Minecraft is not one game and has not been for a decade. It is a survival game, a creative toy, an engineering sandbox, a social platform, a modding target and, for a very large number of people, the first game they ever played. Nothing competes with all six at once. The games on this page each compete with one or two of them, often convincingly, and the moment you pick one you find out which of the other five you were relying on.
Which is why the most reliable recommendation in this whole article is the one the Minecraft team’s own lead developer gave by accident. He looked at the best rival anyone has built, acknowledged it was very polished, and went back to the game with seventeen years of accumulation behind it.
So pick by the trade. Decide which part of Minecraft you actually play, find the game that does that part better, and accept that you are keeping Minecraft installed. Everybody does.
